Massachusetts v. Michelle Carter  aka the "Suicide–by–Text" Trial
Michelle Carter was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the text and phone calls she made to her high school boyfriend Conrad Roy III, in which she coaxed him into taking his own life.  Susan Zalkind covered the controversial trial from indictment to conviction over the course of more than 8,000 words for VICE.

New Hampshire v. Owen Labrie aka The Prep School Rape Case
This rape trial  centered on a ritualistic sex game at a prestigious prep school. A jury subsequently found Owen Labrie guilty of  three misdemeanor statutory rape charges, a charge of endangering a child, and a felony computer charge, and not guilty of the three counts of felony sex assault. When Susan Zalkind reported on a run-in she had with Labrie while riding public transportation, it sparked an investigation.  Labrie was found to be regularly violating the terms of his curfew and his bail was revoked. Zalkind wrote more than 12,000 words on the trial and it's aftermath for VICE and spoke about the case on nearly a dozen local and national radio and TV shows including CNN and NBC's TODAY. 

Massachusetts v. Michael McCarthy  aka The  Baby Doe Case
When the  unidentified body of a 2-year-old girl wrapped in a plastic garbage bag, washed up on the shores of Boston’s infamous Deer Island, the case captured the world's attention. Susan Zalkind was the first reporter to identify Bella Bond and wrote more than 10,000 words on the case and Michael McCarthy's trial for The Daily Beast and others and provided regular commentary for WBUR's flagship show Radio Boston.
